"Turn. Up. The. Heat" (New York Times) with this psychological thriller as New York City detective Michael Bennett faces his most terrifying killer ever. It could be anyone. They could be anywhere.
A killer uses fearsome precision to take out impossible targets.
Detective Michael Bennett teams with a shooting expert—a former Army Ranger and sniper with NYPD's Emergency Services Unit. But Officer Rob Trilling seems more comfortable with rifles than he is with people.
When his new partner begins to log unexplained absences from duty, only Bennett can prove whether the decorated officer is a lonely hunter or a hardened assassin.

In Patterson and Born's latest Michael Bennett thriller (following Obsessed), NYPD detective Bennett must track down a sniper who has been targeting seemingly random victims. The assassin is dubbed "the Long Shot Killer" because he skillfully shoots his victims from a long distance. Rob Trilling, a young ex-Army Ranger, is assigned to help Bennett solve the case. A new recruit, Trilling is silent and secretive and leaves at odd times for surreptitious appointments. Bennett knows nothing about Trilling except that he was a sniper and is exceptionally skilled with a rifle. Bennett invites Trilling home to meet his large family, hoping to unravel his secrets. Complicating matters, Bennett's oldest daughter develops a crush on the handsome young officer. When a rifle bullet casing is discovered in Trilling's car, Bennett is convinced that he is the Long Shot Killer, but he has to be discreet because if he accuses Trilling falsely, it will ruin the young man's career. Narrators Peter Giles and Will Collyer offer a snappily paced performance that keeps the momentum going and makes the characters come alive. VERDICT This confidently narrated, action-packed series continues to deliver; its fans will be pleased.--Ilka Gordon
